Standard on every Tesla: traffic-aware cruise control plus Autosteer. The car holds speed, distance, and lane position on the highway. Think of it as the world's best fatigue reducer on the I-90 to Buffalo.

FSD (Supervised)

Tesla's most advanced package: the car navigates city streets, intersections, turns, and roundabouts end-to-end. You remain responsible and must supervise at all times — it is not autonomous driving for the owner, despite the name.

⚠️ The honest part: FSD (Supervised) is a Level 2 driver-assistance system. The driver must keep eyes on the road and be ready to take over at any moment. How it sees

Modern Teslas run "Tesla Vision": eight cameras feeding a neural network trained on billions of real-world miles, processed by an onboard AI computer. Since FSD v12, the driving behavior itself is produced end-to-end by neural networks rather than hand-written rules — one reason updates can improve the whole driving style at once.

In 2025, Tesla began using FSD in "unsupervised" mode inside its own factories — new cars drive themselves from the production line to the loading docks at Giga Texas and Fremont.

Longevity, measured

Tesla's own impact report data shows its packs retain roughly 80–85% capacity after 200,000 miles on average. Degradation is fastest in the first year, then flattens dramatically. A 2018 Model 3 with 100k miles typically still delivers ~90% of its original range.

Warranty: 8 years and 100,000–150,000 miles (by model) with a guaranteed minimum 70% capacity retention.

Chemistry, briefly

Standard-range Teslas use LFP (lithium iron phosphate) packs — extremely durable and happy to charge to 100% daily. Long-range and performance models use nickel-based packs (2170/4680 cells) that prefer a daily limit around 80%. The car manages all of this for you; you mostly just plug in.

Winter reality (CNY edition)

Cold temporarily reduces range — plan on 20–30% less during a single-digit Syracuse cold snap — and it comes back with the warm weather. The heat pump, preconditioning, and scheduled departure make winter ownership genuinely pleasant. Nothing beats a pre-warmed car and defrosted windshield at 6 a.m. in February.

Regenerative braking

Lifting off the accelerator turns the motors into generators, feeding energy back to the pack. In town you can drive with one pedal, and brake pads on Teslas routinely last well over 100,000 miles because friction brakes are barely used.

Model S, 3, X, and Y have each earned 5-star overall NHTSA ratings, and Tesla vehicles have historically recorded among the lowest probability-of-injury scores NHTSA has ever tested.

Low center of gravity

The floor-mounted battery pack puts the mass low, making rollovers — the deadliest crash type for SUVs — extraordinarily unlikely.

Crumple room

No engine block means the entire front of the car is engineered crumple zone, absorbing energy before it reaches the cabin.

Active safety, standard

Automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot collision warning, and lane departure avoidance are included on every car — no options package required.

Sentry Mode & Dashcam

The cameras double as a 360° security system while parked and a continuous dashcam while driving. Insurance claims get a lot easier with footage.

Software

The car that updates itself

Teslas receive over-the-air updates on your home Wi-Fi, the way your phone does. Owners have woken up to more range efficiency, faster charging curves, new entertainment features, better Autopilot behavior, and entire safety recalls fixed — without visiting a service center.

The companion app is the car key, the climate remote, the charging manager, and the service scheduler. Lost-key anxiety simply isn't a thing.
