Europe's toughest testing named the Model 3 "Best Large Family Car" and the Model Y "Best Small SUV" of 2025 β a double win. The refreshed Model Y posted the highest overall weighted safety score of any vehicle tested in 2025: 91% adult occupant, 93% child occupant, 86% vulnerable road user, 92% safety assist.
Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y have each earned 5-star overall ratings β and Tesla vehicles have historically recorded among the lowest probability-of-injury scores NHTSA has ever measured. The Model Y's 7.9% rollover risk is one of the lowest ever recorded for an SUV.
The insurance industry's own testers awarded the Model Y its highest honor, Top Safety Pick+, for 2025 β covering updated side-impact tests, pedestrian front crash prevention, and headlight performance.
The ratings aren't luck β an EV built from scratch has structural advantages no gas car can copy.
The heaviest component β the battery β is a rigid slab in the floor. The center of gravity sits lower than a sports car's, which is why rollovers, the deadliest crash type for SUVs, are extraordinarily unlikely.
No engine block up front means the entire nose is engineered to collapse progressively, absorbing crash energy before it reaches people. The cabin itself is a fortified cell.
The pack is wrapped in ballistic-grade shielding with automatic disconnects and firewalls. Real-world fire data consistently shows EVs are far less likely to catch fire than gasoline vehicles.
Automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot collision warning, lane-departure avoidance β included, not optional. The car is watching even when Autopilot is off.
Dashcam records the road; Sentry Mode guards the parking lot in 360Β°. When something happens near a Tesla, there's footage β ask any insurance adjuster what that's worth.
Crash-avoidance behavior improves over the air. Several recalls in recent years were fixed by software overnight β no dealer visit, whole fleet at once.
Tesla publishes a quarterly Vehicle Safety Report from its fleet. The latest full figures (Q3 2025): one airbag-level crash per 6.36 million miles driven with Autopilot engaged β versus roughly one per 702,000 miles for U.S. driving overall. That's about a 9Γ better rate.
The honest caveats: Autopilot miles skew toward highways, which are inherently safer per mile; the methodology is Tesla's own (airbag-deployment events); and the figure has drifted down from its 7.63M-mile peak in early 2024 β a trend critics at Electrek and elsewhere fairly point out. Even skeptically read, the data supports one conclusion: a Tesla with an attentive driver plus active safety is a very hard combination to beat.
