Full Self-Driving

The car drives.
Here's what's actually real.

FSD is the most hyped β€” and most argued-about β€” technology in the car world. This page tracks the latest from YouTube, Reddit, and the trade press, with real driverless footage and zero spin. Updated July 2026.

Three things people call "self-driving"

πŸ›ž

Autopilot Every Tesla

Lane-centering + adaptive cruise on the highway. Standard, free, and genuinely great at eating I-90 miles. You drive; it assists.

🧠

FSD (Supervised) Paid option

End-to-end city and highway driving β€” turns, lights, roundabouts, parking. You must watch and stay responsible. This is what you can buy and use today in Central New York.

πŸ€–

Robotaxi No driver at all

Tesla's actually-driverless ride service β€” nobody in the front seats. Live in a growing list of cities (not NY yet). Operated by Tesla's fleet, not your personal car.

See it to believe it

Teslas with nobody driving

Real rider footage β€” empty driver's seat, public roads.

🎬 A rider's first fully unsupervised Robotaxi trip β€” Austin, TX, January 2026. No driver, no safety monitor.

What YouTube, Reddit & the press
are talking about right now

πŸš€

FSD v14.3 β€” the "smooth" update

The spring 2026 releases (v14.3.2, v14.3.3) are earning the best reviews FSD has ever had: a rebuilt AI compiler cut reaction time ~20%, acceleration became "composed and fluid" instead of robotic, and new Arrival Options let the car pick a parking spot, reverse in, and finish the job. Owner consensus on r/TeslaFSD: interventions are getting rare enough to be memorable.

πŸŽ‰

v14 Lite finally lands on HW3 Fresh β€” July 2026

The biggest owner story this month: older Hardware-3 cars (2019–2023 builds) just got their first FSD update in over 14 months. Early-access reviews call the jump from v12.6 "night and day," with smooth parking and far better merges. If you own an older Model 3/Y, this is your news.

πŸ—ΊοΈ

Robotaxi's city-by-city march

Austin launched June 2025 with safety monitors, went fully unsupervised, and the geofence keeps growing. The Bay Area followed. In April 2026, Tesla flipped on Dallas and Houston with nobody in the front seats β€” and guidance calls for Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Las Vegas during 2026.

🧐

The skeptics' corner (worth reading)

Balance matters: Electrek notes the driverless fleet is still small with limited availability, Fortune has challenged how Tesla's robotaxi safety math is reported, and Tesla's own Q3 2025 Autopilot report (1 crash per 6.36M miles β€” ~9Γ— the U.S. average) was its third straight quarterly decline. Bulls and bears both have real points β€” that's the honest state of it.

Milestones

The road to driverless

2016–2020

The long promise

"Full Self-Driving" is announced, sold, and repeatedly delayed. Skepticism is earned.

2024

v12: neural nets take the wheel

Hand-written driving code replaced by end-to-end neural networks. The improvement curve steepens.

Jun 2025

Robotaxi launches in Austin

First paid driverless rides, initially with safety monitors. Factory cars begin delivering themselves to loading docks β€” and one delivers itself to a customer's home.

Oct 2025

FSD v14 ships

Major rewrite for HW4 cars; Robotaxi goes unsupervised in Austin and reaches the Bay Area.

Apr 2026

Dallas & Houston go driverless

Expansion footage shows empty front seats in both cities; five more cities guided for 2026.

Jul 2026

v14 Lite reaches older cars

HW3 owners finally join the v14 era. The install base of near-autonomous Teslas becomes enormous.

What it means here

FSD in Central New York

Robotaxi hasn't reached New York β€” state regulations and winter are both real hurdles β€” but FSD (Supervised) works here today. Owners around Syracuse use it daily on Erie Boulevard, the 481 loop, and city streets. The honest CNY report:

  • Excellent: highway driving, roundabouts, stop-and-go traffic, parking.
  • Good with supervision: downtown Syracuse, school zones, unprotected lefts.
  • Knows its limits: heavy lake-effect snow degrades any camera system β€” it hands control back exactly when you'd expect.

⚠️ FSD (Supervised) is a Level 2 driver-assist system: you are the driver, legally and practically, at all times. Nobody should buy it expecting to nap. Official details: tesla.com/support/fsd · tesla.com/fsd/safety
